Elayna, an orphaned archer in the Shadow Guard, seeks to regain respect within the Guard’s ranks. But her loyalty to the Guard won’t prevent her from using them for her own vengeful plans.
Rowan fights for survival alongside his band of amateur vigilantes in a town occupied by soldiers who enforce the king’s cruel laws. He’s ready to join the bigger fight for Panthera’s freedom—if he can follow orders long enough to earn a place in the rebellion.
Jakk bears the Mark of the Phoenix, a mysterious and powerful magic that he doesn’t want and can’t control. He’ll do anything to wield magic without hurting anyone—even pledge loyalty to the Shadow Guard his grandfather once abandoned.
Elayna, Rowan, and Jakk launch into the Shadow Guard’s fight against the dark evil pervading Panthera. But years of tyranny have marked even the Guard, and pursuing the truth may cost the young rebels the freedom they seek.
